If digital radio services are to take-off and be successful in Africa, there is a need for low-cost mobile phones with digital radio receivers to be readily available. This is from Mr Omar Essack CEO of Primedia Broadcasting, South Africa.
According to Mr Essack, the digital broadcasting services promise of variety, diversity and choice is, or course, great for the consumer and potentially lucrative to broadcasters.
However, the concern is about large-scale consumer take-up of digital radio services in Africa due to the cost of digital radio receivers.
To this end, Mr Essack has suggested that the industry pre-installs DAB, DAB+ and DRM platforms into low-cost Android phones. That according to him will drive access and guarantee massive takeoff.
